Our Neurosurgeons Respond to News of Brain Tumor–Gene Link Found

Dr. Michael Sisti

Important new research linking Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), an aggressive form of brain tumor, with a genetic defect was just published in The Wall Street Journal.

The article was based on research done at Columbia University that was originally published in the journal Science last month. Two neurosurgeons from our Brain Tumor Center, Dr. Michael B. Sisti and Dr. Jeffrey Bruce, help us understand the importance of this new research:

“Researchers in the Columbia University Cancer Center [where the research was conducted] are world leaders in brain tumor research. Their work holds out promise for translation benefits to patients we treat with this kind of brain tumor. Understanding the unique genetic mechanisms underlying a patient’s GBM potentially suggests important diagnostic as well as therapeutic possibilities. ” — Dr. Michael Sisti

Dr. Jeffrey Bruce

“Understanding the molecular changes that take place to transform normal brain cells into tumor cells is important for developing novel targeted therapies. The world-class research team at Columbia has discovered new insight into how some tumors form. More importantly, their understanding of these molecular changes are linked to a potential new treatment.” — Dr. Jeffrey Bruce
